Goats Pass-On Project for Women’s Empowerment
Story
In the lush landscapes of Zomba District, Malawi, where verdant fields meet towering trees, a quiet crisis unfolds. Rural women in Mwambo wake each day to the harsh reality of poverty-struggling to feed their children, afford school fees, or recover from climate-driven crop failures. Many are widows or single mothers, bearing the weight of their families’ survival with few resources to break the cycle.
But there’s a simple, powerful solution: goats.
Why Goats?
Goats are more than livestock; they’re a lifeline. Hardy and low-maintenance, they thrive in Malawi’s climate, providing:
- Income: Goats multiply quickly, and their sale funds education, healthcare, and small businesses.
- Nutrition: Milk and meat improve family diets, combating malnutrition.
- Sustainability: Manure enriches soil, boosting crop yields.
With your support, 80 women in Mwambo will receive 480 goats over three years, along with training in goat-rearing, agribusiness, and financial literacy. The best part? Each beneficiary will “pass on” offspring to another family, creating a ripple effect of empowerment.
Meet Grace’s Family
Grace, a widow and mother of four in Maskini village Chiradzulu district, knows hunger intimately. Last year, her maize harvest failed due to drought. With no savings, she relied on odd jobs to survive. But with two goats from this project, Grace’s story changed. She sold the offspring to pay her children’s school fees and used manure to revive her garden. Today, she dreams of expanding her small vegetable business-all because of goats.
